Monika Langer provides plodding, workmanlike commentary on all 383 sections of The Gay Science, including the poems and rhymes. This can be really helpful to readers who are mystified by individual passages as well as by the structure of the whole. Her insights are not especially acute or profound; she mostly paraphrases Nietzsche for slow and unimaginative audiences. However she never passes up an opportunity (and sometimes even conjures new ones up) to flay Nietzsche for his supposed ignorance of women and other cultures. A determinedly feminist and anti-colonialist reading, then, that is just as banal, unilluminating, and humorless as it sounds. Completely contrary to the spirit of the book and of "la gaya scienza".
